The National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE) is conducted by NECO for Primary 6 pupils seeking admission into Federal Government Colleges (FGCs/unity schools) across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones. It tests candidates in English Language, Mathematics, and General Paper (which includes Science, Social Studies and Verbal Reasoning).

Admission into Federal Government Colleges is zonal. Nigeria is divided into six geopolitical zones and candidates are admitted based on performance within their zone, not nationally. This means you are competing against candidates from your zone (North-West, North-East, North-Central, South-West, South-East, South-South) rather than the entire country.
Strategic tip: Find out the historical cut-off scores for your target FGC and your geopolitical zone. Some zones are more competitive than others. This tells you exactly what score your child needs to aim for.
Focus on identifying and strengthening weak areas. Take a baseline practice test in Mathematics, English and General Paper. Use the results to create a topic priority list.
Practice Common Entrance past questions daily. At least 30-45 minutes per subject per day. Go through 5+ years of past questions. NCEE repeats question types — familiarity with patterns is crucial.
Take full timed mock exams weekly. Three subjects in one sitting, same duration as the real exam. Review every wrong answer with your child and explain the correct reasoning.
Only light revision — no new topics. Focus on boosting confidence through timed practice of familiar material. Make sure your child is physically comfortable with the exam format.
